Dr. Jason Degtyarev is an educational psychologist addressing the diverse needs of youth in public and private education settings. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 2001, he went on to earn a Master’s in Education with focus in counseling and an Education Specialist degree in school psychology at San Diego State University.
At SDSU, he received training in psychoeducational assessment through an ecosystems theoretical lens. He also received training in Narrative Therapy, Dynamic Assessment, and Mediated Learning. At the end of his training, Jason passed the Bilingual, Cross-Cultural, Language and Academic Development (BCLAD) exam and received certification for specialized knowledge, skills and Spanish fluency in bilingual Spanish assessment for Latino youth.
Upon graduation, Jason began working as a school psychologist in San Diego North County. He has served schools with culturally and linguistically diverse students from preschool through high school over a 20 year career span. During that time, he also continued his education, earning certification in an individualized mental health intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (AIM HI).
In 2020, Jason received specialized training and board certification from the School Neuropsychology Institute. There he became proficient in the Miller Model of School Neuropsychology and gained new skills in assessing Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Traumatic Brain Injury, Emotional Disturbance, ADHD, Autism, and Nonverbal Learning Disability.
At that time, he pursued further studies at Alliant International University, specializing in Universal Design for Learning and school-based mindfulness interventions. Jason received his doctor of psychology degree in 2022.
Most recently in 2024, Jason became a National Board Certified Teacher. His specialty is in the area of School Counseling.
Throughout his training and practice, Jason has been enthusiastic about language and culture learning and passionate about ensuring equity in academic, cognitive, social, and emotional education for all learners. He has extensively studied research-based strategies for improving emotional well being and self-regulation. He adopts a "positive psychology" mindset, centering on the foundations of sustained happiness, flow states, and ways to foster self-determination.
Jason has been approved by various school districts in San Diego and surrounding counties to offer independent educational evaluations based on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and section 504 of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
