Standardized academic assessment provides a way to gauge how well a student performs compared to his or her age level peers across the country.
Classroom tests and school diagnostic screenings can give some indication of skills. However, they are screening measures, which may be administered by a computer or in a manner that can yield unreliable results.
The procedures of a standardized achievement test involve collecting data more precisely. Observations during testing can reveal underlying behaviors that facilitate or impede thinking, problem solving, and performance.
Areas assessed include oral language, reading, writing, and math. Results are conveyed in a report that interprets scores and provides recommendations.
